/ letter
to the editor
by composer Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen
after
reading the review of The Elastic Track in the Danish newspaper Politiken,
Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen wrote a letter to the editor in order
to express his
disagreement with the paper’s review (see below).
The letter was never published though.........
"For
many understandable reasons, music critics are seldom reviewed
themselves.
This, however, is the purpose
of this comment: In Thomas Michelsen's review of the "Thursday-Concert" on
March 8th 2007, he writes that the young composer Simon Christensen's
new piece "The Elastic Track" basically belongs in the trash can.
But, if anything, the trash can is where Michelsen should throw his own
review.
He completely missed that we are
facing a new and exciting piece of music with
"The Elastic Track" - consistently conceived and to the point.
No doubt, its sound is macabre, gloomy and even "ugly" -
in the traditional sense of the word - but it is nevertheless imaginatively
composed and strangely expressive. The constant overlapping
rhythms were moreover deeply disquieting.
One hears a new era in this piece.
Or that is; some can hear it - some not.
The composer had a good day on March 8th 2007, the music critic a bad
one."
